The thought is that the more powerful cores of the SD810 SoC generate too much heat, weakening their connections to the motherboard. A more long-term workaround has been found through flashing modified firmware to intentionally disable four of the eight processor cores.

My nexus 6P is also stuck in a boot loop. In these cases, the hardware would have called a failure sooner rather than later even without installing an update the stress of installing an update just happened to be enough to cause failing hardware to fail the rest of the way.
Having seen a much large sample size on this forum (and others) over the past 8 months or so, though, the common factor is undeniably the hardware. Taken from the samples in this thread, sure, it looks like the common denominator is the 8.0 update. Unfortunately we have seen a LOT of these cases, usually with significant spikes corresponding with the release of updates (7.1, 7.1.2, monthly security patches, and now 8.0). I understand your doubts - it took me a while to realize that this wasn't something with a software fix as well.
